Human Language Technology
Human language technology has come a long way to be able to apply to solve real applications. We are focusing on two main applications as follows.
Multi-Lingual Voice Command System for Web Browsing. Palm computers and cell phones are getting small and powerful, and have become one of the main stream computing accessories for professionals. However, the input methods (e.g. keyboard or handwriting) are still very restrictive and inconvenient. A multi-lingual (i.e. English, Cantonese and Putunghua) speaker-independent voice command software for Web browsing on such palm devices will be most valuable. We are developing technologies that could recognize any user calling out the hyper-links to go to the next Web sites, to page up, or to search for a particular site, without relying on a pen or a mouse, in any one of the commonly-used languages. The same software could also be deployed for cell phone applications.
Web-based Translator for
English and Chinese Web Sites. This software project aims at automatically
translate any English Web pages into Chinese language, and visa versa.
Such a system requires the know-how of natural language processing and
Internet technology. The system enables Chinese Web users to understand
information presented in English (90% of the world's Web pages are in English)
and at the same time, allows Westerners to access the Web sites in Chinese
