Providing information as needed for people on the move has become an integral part of the telecommunications infrastructure. Wireless information technology thus becomes one of the key technologies of the nineties and beyond. Transporting information through an unguided medium, wireless communications suffer from hostile transmission conditions while creating mutual interference in the limited shared radio spectrum. Power and weight constraints on portable devices further demand the need for design ingenuity and integration.
The projects being sponsored by the HKTIIT on wireless information technology are of common interest to researchers, developers, manufacturers and service providers. They further address regional needs and competitiveness. One project on Radio Channel Characterization, Modeling, and Assignment which focuses on predicting the hostile transmission conditions that are common in our region and development schemes to minimize mutual interference has been completed.
