Lightwave Technology deals
with photonics, which is the analog of electronic technology in which photons
instead of electrons are used to acquire, store, transmit, and process
information. Photonics offers huge advantages in bandwidth, speed,
and density. Photonics will play a critical role in emerging telecommunication
technologies. Currently deployment of lightwave technology on a large
scale is limited by the availability of new advanced optical materials
that can cause efficient interactions among different optical fields and/or
externally applied electric field. The development of new generation
thin film materials to bring about large scale application of Lightwave
Technology in telecommunications and information processing is a major
focus of the HKTIIT supported Lightwave Technology Research Programme at
HKUST. Other areas of emphasis include development of new characterization
methods, device concepts, as well as advanced thin film fabrication techniques.
Future research activities will include device fabrication and system design.
