An Infrastructure for MPEG-4 Based Interactive Multimedia Systems and Applications

Abstract :
In this project, we aim to develop a major infrastructure for building MPEG-4 based application oriented systems that can lead to major industrial collaboration.  We will focus on fundamental issues related to coding, database storage and retrieval and networking of MPEG-4.  We will explore new encoding algorithms aiming for higher coding efficiency, improved performance, and fast compression and decompression times.  No MPEG-4 hardware implementation is available at present, and any future implementation is likely to be very much application specific.  Therefore, software-based implementation is a natural and viable option.  We propose an implementation of MPEG-4 video encoder using parallel processing on a cluster of dedicated workstations collectively working as a virtual machine.  We will propose modeling techniques that will capture the spatio-temporal relations between various MPEG-4 objects.  We also propose to develop scheduling and data partitioning schemes to enable the encoder to achieve real-time encoding capabilities.  We will build two application prototypes that we feel have a high potential for industrial collaboration and commercialization.
