Computational Study of the Optical Fiber Manufacturing Process to Improve the Optical and Mechanical Characteristics of the Fiber

Abstract :
The main objectives of the proposed research are to identify methods of improving the overall quality of the optical fiber for telecommunication uses. Thus, the proposed work will not only provide a scientifically based understanding of the complex optical fiber manufacturing process, but will also provide results which will be of direct interest to the industrial community. The overall quality of an optical fiber can be quantified in terms of its optical characteristics. For this, the loss and dispersion in the transmitting signal are of primary considerations. In fact, these aspects are strongly dependent on the thermal and material transport which occur during the drawing, cooling and coating of the optical fiber production process.  To achieve the stated objective, a comprehensive project involving the efforts of several researchers is proposed. Attention will be focused on the areas of fiber drawing, fiber cooling, fiber coating. A collaborative effort with colleagues in overseas will be a key feature of this project.
