Abstract :
As the transmission speed of networks increases toward the Gb/s range, transporting multimedia information (e.g., voice, video, data) over a single network that covers a large geographical area becomes more feasible.  However, due to the diversity of the traffic supported and the relatively long end-to-end propagation delay of the network, many research problems remain to be solved before such a high-speed network can become fully operational and provide good service to users. This project has four main objectives :

1. to study the traffic modelling of variable-bit-rate (VBR) MPEG video and LAN interconnection;
2. to study dynamic network control schemes suitable for high-speed networks;
3. to set up a high-speed ATM network testbed at HKUST to simulate and test the proposed schemes; and
4. to investigate the design and implementation of multimedia applications.
